Why do I need a website?

I am assuming you are here because you are thinking that you or your business, or your local community centre or favourite charity, should have a website.

Maybe you have not quite made your mind up or maybe you just think it is about time you had one but are not really sure why.

Well, if you do decide that you want a website, and lets face it, most organisations and most individuals these days do, the first and most important decision you have to make is what you want your website to do. After that the rest should come naturally.

So, what do websites do and why should you get one?

On a very basic level a website offers three main things;

Information
What kind of information do you wish to present? And to whom?

Your web site can offer all this and more, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Communication
What type of feedback do you need? Sales? New customers? Communication with existing clients?

Remember, the website is open for business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Opportunities
The opportunity to catch a ride on the biggest tsunami since the invention of the steam engine. The opportunity to make a difference, to sell a message, and hey, maybe make some money, why not !

These questions are fundamental to the unique purpose and design of your website - we at websitebrokers can help you to find the answers.

Once you have decided to go ahead and get a website there are a few options you need to consider.

For example, do you want one built from scratch - in other words you’re starting with a clean sheet of paper and you plan to conceptualise and design the website, then prepare specifications concerning the standard HTML web design, probably incorporating elements of a database driven web design using PHP and MySQL, together with some optional extras such as Flash animation and rollover buttons.

Oh, and you will need arrange to set up a web space, the domain name and e-mail facilities.

Then you should budget for approximately $20,000 - $30,000 to have the site built; sit through dozens of presentations; spend weeks developing a more detailed specification; and then wait for months while the site is agreed, built and tested.

Complicated ? – I’ve just started on the possible complications!

Alternatively you could purchase a second-hand (”pre-loved” ?) website.

That’s right – you would buy a second hand car or boat, or house so why not save money, and hassle, by advertising for a website wanted.

You then SEE, TASTE, and SMELL the website before you purchase it. You could even negotiate to purchase it on a deferred payment schedule, say monthly payments.

So now go back up a few paragraphs; up the page to “Information” - What kind of information do you want to present? And to whom?

Now go to the next line:

Communication - What type of feedback do you need? Sales? New customers? Communication with existing clients?.

The Opportunities part – that’s up to you, but first you need that website.

OK what next ?
Easy. Write down your answers and email them to us.

Now all you have to do is sit back and wait, but to keep you busy while waiting you should be considering the following:

  • How are you going to keep the website updated?
  • How will you make sure that people visit it?

Some people decide to learn how to look after the website for themselves, while others simply don't have the time or the inclination and would rather have someone else do this job.

You need to decide which option fits your needs.

Once we have your website it is likely to need regular and substantial updates.

We at websitebrokers, at absolutely no additional charge to you, and only at your request, will provide details of suitable organisations, in your State/ Country, that can arrange a maintenance agreement.

Likewise if your site only needs occasional updates we can provide details of several suitable organisations that can assist you.

Alternatively if you decide to look after the site yourself we can point you in the right direction to learn how to do it.

    The choice is yours.

  • Website Brokers?

Can a website broker help you sell your website? If so, how? and how much?

Brokers, including websitebrokers.com.au, are not essential when negotiating and conducting the sale/ purchase of an existing website.

It is possible to handle the sale of your website yourself and save the brokers commission. This is typically 10 percent of the final sale price, but some brokers will charge up to 15%.

Note however that websitebrokers.com.au charge NO fee/commission on any sale/ purchase/ exchange.

Normally you would handle the sale yourself if you have a buyer in mind (such as a colleague or relative) and feel comfortable working on the sale of your website with your current lawyer and accountant.

And, whether you hire a websitebroker or not, you will find yourself doing a lot of the selling work yourself.

Prospective website buyers will have questions, and no one knows your website better than you. As a result, the buyer and seller of a website, unlike the buyer and seller of a house or a “bricks and mortar” business, will almost never meet.

On the other hand, using a websitebroker does offer several benefits. For example,

Having a websitebroker manage the sale of your website allows you to keep the negotiations, and the impending transaction, confidential.

This can prevent potentially alienating your customer base, employees and other important business relationships. Using a websitebroker can allow you to focus on running your website until the sale goes through, and can save you a lot of headaches.

In addition, some prospective website buyers may be more comfortable dealing with a websitebroker rather than directly with the owner, particularly in the initial stages of a deal.

Many people interested in buying their own website will contact a websitebroker, tell them what type of website the are looking for, and see what is available.

The websitebroker then tries to match the prospective buyer with the best possible business. This means a good broker should have a solid pool of potential buyers right off the bat.

In addition, a websitebroker will facilitate the negotiations through suggesting alternative solutions in the event of a seemingly insurmountable impasse over price, or other terms of trade.

For example in the case of one transaction it was agreed that the prospective buyer would "lease" or "rent" the website for twelve months with the option (the right but not the obligation) to purchase at the end of the twelve month period. It worked, and both parties were delighted with the outcome.

A reputable websitebroker will always act impartially and in a confidential manner to secure the best outcome for both parties.
